Peter de Thouars [1952, Djakarta, Indonesia]
Peter de Thouars’ bi-cultural background offers him unique perspectives and guides him toward themes that continue to shape his work to this day: migration, identity, spirituality, mysticism, intuition, and connection. These themes are an inherent part of his creative journey, in which he constantly seeks ways to make the invisible visible.
During his studies at the Art Academy in Arnhem, he found inspiration in the radical ideas of Joseph Beuys and his students, such as Blinky Palermo. Their vision of art as a transformative force resonates with him. He also rediscovered this transformative power in the patterns and empty fields of traditional Javanese batik cloths and wood carvings. His Eastern roots bring a specific layering to his work, bridging traditional mystical philosophy with contemporary abstract art.
De Thouars’ abstract works reflect the infinity of the universe: white spaces and deep colors intertwined with intricate patterns. Everything in his art is interconnected, both visibly and intuitively—as poetic meditations on time and humanity.
Inspired by the films and ideas of Tarkovsky, he sees his work as a reminder to the viewer that we are not alone, adrift in an empty universe, but rather connected through mystical paths and countless threads to our past and present.
His art invites reflection, showing that we are all part of a greater whole in which nothing exists in isolation.
